Dual Risk Training is dedicated to one of the most critical (and consistently overlooked) gaps in professional practice: the intersection of domestic abuse and suicide.

NEW for 2026: get your own copy of an important new White Paper from Confident Conversations:

Research published (Lancet) found that nearly half of all domestic abuse victims (49.7%) experience suicidal thoughts, yet most practitioners are trained to respond to domestic abuse or to suicidal crisis and rarely, if ever, trained to handle both in the same conversation.

When coercive control and suicidal crisis collide, risk to life escalates dramatically, and the consequences of missing that overlap can be fatal. Even if people are trained in “typical” suicide intervention training, that still may not help and in fact, could increase the risk to them.

Dual Risk Training changes that.

Offered in flexible formats from 90-minute awareness sessions to half-day skills sessions, our training meets your team where they are – whether you’re looking to raise awareness, build confidence, or develop specialist knowledge and focuses specifically on helping people who may not have the same liberty, agency, opportunity available to them as others might.

All our sessions are facilitated by an experienced, qualified professional in a down to earth, practical way. No fluff.

Grounded in current research and real-world experience, every session equips professionals across health, social care, policing and beyond with the language, skills, and confidence to intervene appropriately according to their job role. Whether Recognise, Respond or Reach In, we have the training that helps people look out for the warning signs, ask the right questions, and respond in ways that genuinely save lives.

When we treat domestic abuse and suicide as two separate problems belonging to two separate teams with two different frameworks, we are bound to miss people. That is the gap that this specialist training fills and delivered at 3 different levels. More “general” suicide prevention training simply does not fill the gap appropriately as it does not take into account the very unique and often very restricted choices a victim-survivor might have. Please make sure you are bridging that gap and not allowing people to keep falling through.

What do you need? We can help you work it out.

Helping our clients achieve as much as possible, with even the smallest of budgets, we can mix and match to suit.

Lunch n Learn - Recognise

I might only see you once, briefly, across a counter or in a waiting room. My job is to notice when something isn’t right and make sure you don’t disappear into the system unnoticed. Suitable for whole community and organisation workforce: reception staff, housing officers, community-facing roles, GP receptionists, schoolteachers and more.

Helping you to understand why this population is at elevated risk, recognise warning signs, and know clearly what to do, including when someone has already left the relationship – 45 minutes online session.

Respond

Staff in direct and ongoing contact with individuals: keyworkers, support workers, community health roles. How to engage in meaningful conversation, knowing what to say and what NOT to say.

Communicate with confidence, lean into professional curiosity, signpost actively and maintain contact.

90 minutes online session

Reach In

Deliberately named and aimed at Specialist DA practitioners, IDVAs, safeguarding leads, GPs and practice nurses – professionals who have the opportunity to engage and support this person and spend time with them. Intended to help you hold complex dual risk situations with skill, including adapted safety planning, post-separation risk, and their own well-being. Half day session.

All these sessions are delivered by qualified, accredited Suicide Intervention Tutors with specialist knowledge who have delivered thousands of training hours over the years.

Dual Risk recognises that victims of coercive control are at risk from their perpetrators as well as from their own thoughts – and for two years running in the UK we have had more deaths by suicide than homicide in domestic abuse settings – we really must join the dots.
